Every day we lose between 50 and 100 hairs naturally, which are replaced by new ones that will have an average life of between 2 and 6 years. This is known as the hair life cycle and is divided into three phases:
- Phase 1 - Growth: It is the longest phase, lasting between 2 and 6 years. The hair emerges from the pilot follicle and grows at a rate of approximately 1 centimeter per month. The people who best nourish their hair and live a healthy lifestyle will see it grow faster.
- Phase 2 - Maintenance: This phase lasts between 2-3 weeks. The pilot bulb that collected all the food is separated from the bloodstream, so the hair is no longer fed and stops growing. In this phase it is common that, when combing, we take more than one hair, since it is not as anchored as in the previous phase.
- Phase 3 - Fall: The hair no longer grows, but remains attached to the follicle for approximately 3 months, in which the hair is pushed out and replaced by a new one. After this period, the hair falls out when we wash or brush it and a new cycle begins.
The problem begins when the daily hair loss is greater than normal and its density decreases, becoming finer and weaker and weaker and making the scalp begin to thin.
This can occur for different reasons: increased levels of androgynous hormones (androgenic alopecia), genetics, stress, illness, medications, pregnancy and diet.
Hair loss, apart from causing aesthetic problems, can also affect the emotional level, producing a vicious cycle of stress that increases hair loss.
